How to Decipher Printer Error Codes
See if your printer has a small digital screen on the front. The error code should be in that screen. Sometimes on smaller printers it's a series of flashing lights.
Copy down what scrolls or flashes across the screen or make note of which lights are flashing.
Consult your printer user guide first. If you cannot find the error code, try online support.
Locate your error code on the list.
Check to see if your printer is out of paper if Code 11 appeared.
Pull out your printer cartridge and reinsert it if a Code 12 is present. This is an indication that something is preventing the printer door from closing completely.
Refer to your user's manual if Code 13 comes up. This is a paper jam and most printers have specific instructions for that model to clear up jams.
Notice if there's a difference of color in your print jobs if Code 16 comes up. This is often a problem with the toner in the print cartridge. Try shaking it, then reinsert it. If the problem persists, replace the cartridge.
Adjust the page margins or font type if you get a Code 20/21. You have a print job that is too large for the memory to accept. If you still have problems, call a local technician to add more memory.
How to Add a Printer (7 Steps)
To add a printer, first follow your printer's instruction manual to assemble your printer and connect it to your computer. When you are ready to install the software, have your printer's CD-ROM or floppy disk handy.
Open the Start menu and choose Settings, then Printers.
Double-click on Add Printers.
Follow the instructions provided by the Print wizard. If you're adding a network printer, be sure to find out its name or network path. To make sure you're using the most recent printer driver, insert your printer CD-ROM or floppy disk when asked. You can also choose a preinstalled driver that matches the printer make and model you're trying to add, but it might be older than a driver that came with the printer. (If you're installing a networked printer, ask your system administrator if there are newer drivers available on the network.)
When prompted, indicate whether you want to use this printer as the default. If you have only one printer, you will say yes. If you have two, you must choose which one is to be the default.
When asked if you want to print a test page, it is a good idea to say yes.
When satisfied, click Finish to complete the installation process.
How to Clean Clogged Inkjet Print Heads
Use the printer's utility program to self-clean the printer. This process may need to be repeated as many as 5 to 10 times. Often this will resolve the problem.
Turn the printer off, preferably overnight, if the self-cleaning utility has not worked. The ink may need to soften before the self-cleaning utility will be successful. Turn the printer on and try the self-cleaning utility again several times.
Determine from the owner's manual where the print head is located. Epson printers, for example, are usually in the printer. Many other brands place the print head in the cartridge.
Remove the cartridge. For models where the print head is in the printer, drop seven to 10 drops of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) down the ink receptacle area. This is the hole where the ink flows into the head from the cartridge. Run a few self-cleaning utilities. If necessary, allow to sit a few hours or overnight and repeat the self-cleaning utility.
Soak the cartridge print head in hot water if the print head is in the cartridge. Allow to soak overnight. Dry the print head area with a paper towel. Repeat the self-cleaning utility.
Place the cartridge print head in isopropyl alcohol if the hot water soak did not unclog the print head. Leave the print head covered in alcohol overnight. Use a damp paper towel to wipe off the print head area. Dry carefully. Try the self-cleaning utility again.
Purchase a new cartridge if the alcohol soak did not unclog the print head in the cartridge. This will provide new print heads that won't be clogged. Contact a service technician for repair of print heads in the printer if the alcohol did not unclog the print head.

How to Install Canon Print Cartridges (7 Steps)
Purchase new printer cartridges that match the current printer cartridges in number and model.
Turn on the Canon printer.
Open the top panel of the printer. This will allow the printer cartridges to move to the center for easy access.
Remove the used printer cartridges.
Open the new cartridges and pull off the plastic tab, being careful not to touch the strip under the tab.
Insert the new cartridges in the right location. For instance, the color ink goes on a certain side, and the black ink goes on the other side. Close the front panel.
Print a test page to ensure proper installation.
How to Buy the Correct HP Ink Cartridge for Your Printer
Gather some information about your printer. What type is it? Is it a Deskjet, a Photosmart, an All-in-One printer? You can usually find this information on the front of your printer or when you go into the Printers folder on your computer. For example, you might see the printer named 'HP Photosmart 8100 Series'---this is a Photosmart printer.
Find the number of the printer series. This number should appear right after the printer type---for the 'HP Photosmart 8100 Series' printer, the series number is 8100.
Find the model number. This number should appear on the front of the printer, in the documentation that comes with the printer, or in the printer settings. For our example, the HP Photosmart 8100 Series printer, the model number may be 8150.
Determine what type of ink you want. Some printers can use several types of ink, designed for different uses. Are you printing mostly documents? Are you printing photos? Do you do mostly black-and-white printing? Determine how you're going to use the printer before you look for ink.
Find the right cartridges online. This is recommended even if you're going to buy them from a brick-and-mortar store, because HP has a website where you can find out exactly which cartridges you need before you go.
Select your printer type---for our example, you would select 'Photosmart' under the Home products. If you have a business printer, look for the printer type under Business products. You will be taken to another page where you will enter the rest of the printer info.
Select the printer type in the 'Step 1' drop-down box. Select the printer series in the 'Step 2' drop-down box. Select the printer model in the 'Step 3' drop-down box. Press the 'Shop' button.
You will see a list of compatible cartridges. If you want to buy online, you can purchase them directly from this page.
If you're going to buy in the store or on another site, the information to look for is the two-digit code for the cartridges. This code is printed on the front of the cartridge box. For the 'HP Photosmart 8100 Series' printer in our example, the compatible cartridges are numbers 94, 95, 96, 97 and 99.
There are three basic types of ink: black, tri-color and photo. If you print mostly black-and-white documents or greyscale images, choose a black cartridge to avoid wasting color ink when it's not necessary. If you print documents with color, the tri-color cartridge is the best choice, printing clear color in document quality. If you have a photo printer or print mostly photos, the photo cartridges will give you the best result. So for our example 'HP Photosmart 8100 Series' printer, you might select:
---HP 94 Black for black-and-white documents
---HP 95 Tri-Color for color documents
---HP 95/99 Twinpack for printing a mix of color documents and photos
---HP 99 for photo printing
The cartridge boxes are also color-coded. Blue boxes are the standard cartridges, now lower-yield (meaning fewer pages printed per cartridge) as well as lower in price. Green boxes are for high-yield cartridges. Red boxes are for specialty ink, such as photo cartridges.
