How to Fix a Printer

Turn off the printer's power, and shut down the computer. If the printer quit working suddenly, a reboot may be all that is needed. Once the computer is completely shut down, turn it back on. When it is fully up and running, turn the power back on to the printer. This will clear the memory and may solve the issue.
Check the ink levels of the printer's cartridges. If the ink is too low or the cartridge is damaged, many printers will stop working. Replace any low ink cartridges. Try swapping fuller cartridges to rule a damaged one out as a problem.
Make sure the printer is set as the computer's default. Many times, a different or no longer present printer is listed, and print jobs are sent elsewhere or nowhere at all. Go to 'Start.'
Click 'Settings.'
Select 'Printers and Faxes' and find the non-working printer in the list. Right click it and make sure 'Default' is selected. If not, click 'Default.' Try printing again.
Check all connections. Start at the back of the printer and make sure all cords and wires are plugged in securely. If the printer is plugged in to a surge protector or power strip, verify that the strip is working properly. Follow the cords to the back of the hard drive to make sure those cords are also secure.
Update the printer's drivers. Go to the manufacturer's website. Look for drivers under 'Support.' A new driver may have a patch that tackles a known issue.
