How to Use USB Port for Printer (4 Steps)
Buy a USB cord that has a connector compatible with your printer. Some printers use type A USB connectors, while others use type B. The USB connector needs to be the same size and shape as the USB plug on your printer.
Plug in the printer's power cord and turn it on. Turn on the computer you want to use with the printer.
Install the printer's software and drivers. Insert the printer's installation disc in the computer's optical drive if you have it. If you do not, go to the printer manufacturer's website and find the drivers link. Type in the model printer you have and follow the manufacturer's instructions for downloading the software and drivers. The download or disc will start up an installation software program that will give you directions on how to finish the installation.
Plug the USB cord into the printer and computer after the software and drivers are installed. You may now begin using the printer.
