How to Set Up for Book Printing

Open Adobe Reader or Acrobat on your computer.
Create or open an existing PDF that you plan to print as a book. The pages don’t have to be reordered in any way—just order the pages the way they should be read. The software will format the booklet for you.
Click the “File” menu, then “Print.” Make sure your printer is already connected to your computer and fed with paper.
Select the “Page Scaling” menu under “Page Handling” in the “Print” dialog box. Select “Booklet Printing.” This feature will arrange the pages of your PDF so that when the printed sheets are folded in half, the book pages will be ordered correctly.
Make a selection in the “Booklet Subset” menu, depending on the type of printer you have. You’ll need to print the book on both sides of the paper. Choose “Both Sides” if your printer supports duplex printing, which occurs when both sides of the paper are printed in one pass through the printer. Otherwise, choose “Front Side Only.” Once you click “Print,” Adobe will print only the pages on the front side of each sheet of paper. Click “Print.”
Turn the printed pages over if your printer doesn’t support duplex printing. Re-feed them into the printer so you can print on the other side. Click “File, Print” again and choose “Back Side Only” under “Booklet Subset.” Once all the pages are printed properly, you can fold the pages in half, collate and secure the booklet with staples or clasps.

Open an existing Adobe InDesign file you want to set up as a booklet. It works similarly to the process in Adobe Acrobat or Reader but provides more options.
Click the “File” menu. Choose “Print Booklet.”
Specify the booklet options you want. For the basic, side-by-side, two-page spreads, select “2-up Saddle Stitch.” This will allow you to create printer spreads that will be arranged so you can fold them into a book. If you want, specify the margins for the book, which determines the amount of white space around the print area.
Select “Odd Pages Only” to print the first side of pages. Turn the printed sheets over and reload into the printer. Click “File, Print Booklet” again to select “Even Pages Only” and print the remaining pages on the other side of the paper.

Open a multipage document in Microsoft Word that you plan to format as a book. This is best for creating one-page folded documents, such as an invitation.
Click the “Page Layout” tab. In the “Page Setup” group, click “Margins.” Click “Custom Margins.”
Click the “Multiple Pages” list under “Pages.” Select “Book Fold.” This will automatically create two pages on one sheet of paper, with a wide centerfold for booklet folding.
Click “File, Print”--or the “Microsoft Office Button” if you are using Word 2007. Select your printer and “Manual Duplex” to print on each side of the paper. Word will print on one side and then prompt you to turn over the pages and print on the other side.
